Pair of candlesticks
Period: 18th century
Rare pair of Genoese "torretta" candlesticks dated (1)754, cast and chased silver. The octagonal base features an elegant stepped border with a parallel molding, from the center develops vertically the faceted stem. The ensemble constitutes a perfect balance, a measured elegance typically Ligurian. Examples of this specific typology are extremely rare; in the volume L'argenteria genovese del settecento, F. Boggero/F. Simonetti, Umberto Allemandi, 2007, in the section dedicated to candlesticks, only two similar pairs are published, one dated (1)737 (fig. 6 p. 165) and one dated (1)740 (fig. 11 p. 167). Our pair enriches the known corpus, chronologically placing itself in continuity with the documented examples. This specific typology of candlesticks, according to Gianna Roccatagliata in one of her publications, would be quite common in travel sets. Fashions and destinations change, but beauty never fades! Dimensions: height 18.5 cm - base 11 x 11 cm
