Dying Christ - SOLD
Author : Orazio De Ferrari (Voltri 1606 – Genova 1657)
Period: 17th century
The figure of Christ almost completely occupies this beautiful canvas by the Genoese painter Orazio De Ferrari (1606-1657). A dark background, covered with clouds, is torn by a beam of light that illuminates the man's face and attracts his gaze. The horizon is marked by a light of depth that illuminates the walls and buildings of a stylized Jerusalem.
Like many other artists, Orazio also looks to the models of Christ expiring by the Flemish master Anton Van Dyck (one of his works from around 1627 is now kept in the Museum of Palazzo Reale in Genoa) from which our canvas is a clear derivation.
Having entered the workshop of Andrea Ansaldo, he later moved to Genoa. His works, initially influenced by his master and the Flemish painter Rubens, transformed and took shape in the "naturalistic Baroque" after coming into contact with the great painters working in Genoa in the first half of the seventeenth century.
The work, of great emotional impact, can be dated between 1640 and 1645.
