Pair of electuary vases - SOLD
Period: Early 18th century
Wonderful pair of electuary vases originally used in pharmacies, with "figurative Baroque" decoration in blue monochrome on white enamel; they have a round-shaped body, two zoomorphic handles, and a collar for securing the lid. Both specimens bear the "Savona coat of arms" mark on the bottom.
Below and above the cartouche, within which the writing of the medicine once contained is legible Ell. Croci Mart. / Ell. Elescopl, winged cherubs swoop among shrubs and foliage; the back is decorated over the entire surface with figures and cherubs within a landscape, scenes usually with an uninterpretable meaning in our artifacts.
Analyzing the style and refinement of the decoration of the two vases, the high mastery of the painter/decorator can be affirmed with certainty, and affinities can be found with some majolica from the Guidobono area dating back to between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century.
