Crowning with Thorns - SOLD

The small canvas, the work of the Genoese painter Domenico Piola (Genoa 1627 - 1703), depicts the biblical episode of the Crowning with Thorns. Typical are the Piola's physiognomies of the master and the use of a chromatic range played on warm and cold tones to contrast and illuminate the characters. The small size, the horizontal distribution of the scene and the fluent and rapid application of the material suggest that it is a sketch, perhaps preparatory for a larger work that is part of a decorative pictorial cycle dedicated to the Stories of the Passion of Christ perhaps destined for some oratory (as already happened in other cases).
