The full-length figure depicted in this large canvas, shown frontally, is Saint Lawrence, identifiable by his traditional iconographic attributes. The martyr saint wears the red dalmatic of a deacon, resting one hand on the gridiron, the instrument of his martyrdom, while with the other he holds the Book of Gospels to his chest in a gesture expressing deep devotion and serene acceptance of his destiny. A fluttering cherub is in the act of placing a wreath of flowers on the saint's head, a symbol of the reward of celestial glory that will be granted to him after his martyrdom, evoked by the palm branch he holds in his other hand. Stylistic analysis reveals significant affinities with the pictorial language of Valerio Castello, allowing this canvas to be attributed to his pupil, the Genoese painter Stefano Magnasco (Genoa, 1635-1672 approx.). Despite belonging to an ancient period, the work retains a strong expressive intensity that gives it a surprising modernity, capable of establishing a dialogue with contemporary spaces and sensibilities.
