The Entombment of Christ
Author : Pittore fiammingo inizi del XVII secolo
Period: 17th century
Measures H x L x P
The large-scale painting (295x187 cm) "The Entombment of Christ" is one of the masterpieces masterfully painted by the master Federico Barocci (Urbino, 1535-1612); the work, created between 1579 and 1582, was commissioned to the painter by the Confraternity of the Cross and Sacrament of Senigallia. Bellori recounts in "Le vite de' pittori, scultori et architetti moderni"... this work, due to its beauty,.. was continually copied,.. [Rome 1672, p. 179] by numerous artists of the time, both Italian and foreign, who came to Italy to study. This "small" (54.5x42.5 cm) and beautiful copper plate offers an example. The scene depicts the moment when the body of Christ, supported by some disciples, has been taken down from the cross to be led to the tomb. In the background, the Virgin Mary, overcome with grief, is supported by the holy women; at her feet, kneeling with her hands crossed in prayer, is Mary Magdalene. In the background, top right, on the summit of the hill, the three crosses are silhouetted; at the bottom left, the facade of an architectural building emerges, a convent, perhaps a real reference to Urbino. The figure at the bottom left, present in this version but absent in Barocci's original painting, depicts a confraternity member of the Confraternity of the Cross and Sacrament, the commissioner of the work. He has himself portrayed within the sacred scene with a bunch of keys in hand; the attribute indicates his role within the order, that of Prior, who plausibly wished to commission a copy of the work for his private devotion. The use of copper allows for an extremely defined rendering of details and a chromatic brilliance that only this type of support can offer, a work further enhanced by a guilloché frame that covers it. Now as then, lacking the space for a three-meter altarpiece, the simpler possibility remains of desiring a small painting to admire every day. Here it is! Dimensions: copper 54.5 x 42.5 cm - frame 71.5 x 59 cm
